What Is a Geared Motor?

A geared hub motor uses an internal gear reduction system between the motor and the wheel.

The motor can operate at a higher rotational speed while the gearing converts that rotation into wheel torque.

This is different from a direct-drive hub motor, which connects the motor more directly to the wheel.

Why Use a Geared Motor?

Geared motors are commonly used when manufacturers want a combination of relatively compact motor size, useful low-speed torque and reasonable weight.

The actual result depends on the motor design, gearing, controller, battery voltage and vehicle load.

Does 1000W Mean the Same Thing on Every Electric Cruiser?

No.

The wattage printed on a motor should not be used as the only method of comparing two vehicles.

Performance also depends on:

  • Battery voltage
  • Controller current
  • Motor efficiency
  • Gear ratio
  • Wheel size
  • Vehicle weight
  • Rider weight
  • Terrain
  • Temperature
  • Battery condition

Two vehicles with the same nominal motor power can therefore perform differently.

The AS201 Motor Configuration

The AS201 uses a 1000W geared motor as part of a 48V electrical system.

The motor works together with the controller, battery and 20×4.0 tires. The complete system determines acceleration, hill performance, energy consumption and maximum speed.

Why Rider Weight Matters

An electric cruiser carrying a heavier load requires more energy, particularly when accelerating or climbing.

This can affect both performance and range.

For distributors, motor power should therefore be considered together with the vehicle’s rated load and intended terrain.

A Practical Way to Compare Motors

When comparing electric cruisers, buyers should request the complete electrical specification instead of looking only at the motor label.

A useful specification sheet should identify:

  • Rated motor power
  • Battery voltage
  • Battery capacity
  • Controller specification
  • Motor type
  • Wheel and tire size
  • Rated load

This gives a more useful basis for product comparison.
